North Kings GSA member agencies cooperate with California Department of Water Resources in flood response efforts
North Kings GSA member agency Fresno Irrigation District (FID) continues to cooperate and support the Department of Water Resources (DWR) in its emergency flood response efforts, with plans to continue serving in the coming months as a reliable resource to the State and surrounding communities at risk of flooding.
DWR reached out to FID for help reducing flood impacts on the Kings River, Tulare Lake, and San Joaquin River. FID and Fresno Metropolitan Flood Control District (FMFCD) have opened use for DWR on two existing FMFCD basins. Water is pumped out of adjacent FID canals and into the FMFCD basins for flood control and groundwater recharge. DWR is supplying a temporary pump and siphon, and is funding the equipment rental, fuel, and security.
With existing basins in place, the North Kings GSA and its member agencies are equipped to serve stakeholders and community members in the Central Valley when emergencies occur. The basins allow storage of water that may otherwise cause damage to communities during excessive rainy periods.
