City of Kerman and Fresno Irrigation District to Dedicate Lions Park Groundwater Recharge Basin

KERMAN, CA – The City of Kerman will celebrate the dedication of new water conservation infrastructure that will provide metered water contracted from the Fresno Irrigation District (FID) to recharge the City’s largest retention and recharge basin at Lions Park.

The project, in partnership with FID, the North Kings Groundwater Sustainability Agency (NKGSA) and with funding from the Proposition 68 Sustainable Groundwater Management Act Implementation Project Grant from the Department of Water Resources (DWR), will help achieve goals of the North Kings Groundwater Stability Agency (GSA), of which Kerman is a member, and as one of seven GSAs in the Kings Sub-basin which has an approved Groundwater Sustainability Plan from the DWR.

The project allows the City to accurately account for the recharge occurring at the Lions Park Recharge Basin, which helps the City meet its groundwater sustainability goals. The water delivered to the Lions Park Recharge Basin is conveyed through FID’s infrastructure and a turnout on FID’s Siskiyou Canal. The project included a meter and associated telemetry to better account for the total water being delivered and recharged at the Lions Park Recharge Basin.

The City of Kerman is committed to doing groundwater sustainability projects, such as the Lions Park Recharge and Meter Project, to mitigate for the groundwater pumping occurring within its boundaries. “This project highlights our responsible stewardship of our most valuable resource – water”, said City Manager John Jansons.

The Lions Park Recharge and Meter Project is anticipated to provide an average annual benefit of 195 acre-feet per year and cost just over $200,000 to complete. Local engineering firm, Yamabe and Horn Engineering of Fresno, designed the project and construction was completed earlier this year by DG Construction, Inc.

A brief dedication ceremony will be held on Monday, December 9th at 9:00 am at the Lions Park Recharge Basin located at 764 S. Park Avenue in southwest Kerman.

The public is welcomed to attend. For additional information or inquiries, please contact John Jansons, City Manager at the City of Kerman at 559-550-1414 or Bill Stretch, General Manager of the Fresno Irrigation District at 559-233-7161.
