KMJ Now, a news talk radio station, featured Executive Officer Kassy Chauhan in an interview with Don York to discuss the new well registration requirement in the North Kings GSA. All wells including agricultural, industrial, domestic, school district, and public water system wells must be registered by November 30, 2025, to avoid a $100 late registration fee per well. Registering wells helps the North Kings GSA manage groundwater at the local level.

Don: All Fresno area residents who have a water well within the North King’s Groundwater Sustainability Agency will have to register those wells. The North King’s GSA is requiring this as part of local groundwater management under state law. You must register by November 30 or face paying a late registration penalty. Kassy Chauhan, North King’s GSA executive Officer tells us more.
Kassy: Well registration is now required. The North King’s Groundwater Sustainability Agency had that program started effectively May 1, 2025, and the program is a continuation of a voluntary program that was started about a year ago in March of 2024. So, the well registration program was approved, and the well registration requirement was approved by the North King’s GSA Groundwater Sustainability Agency’s Board of Directors on April 24, 2025, with an effective date of May 1st. So, we just made the announcement that now wells are required if they’re within the North King’s GSA boundary to be registered. And we do have some tools on our groundwater sustainability agency’s website, northkingsgsa.org that will provide information, even helping landowners figure out if they are located within the North King’s Groundwater Sustainability Agency’s boundary.
Don: Not just with agriculture, but we’re talking about anyone, basically, who has a well needs to register.
Kassy: That’s correct. If they’re within the GSA boundary, we are requiring that all types of wells be registered, because the groundwater sustainability agency is responsible for management of all groundwater within the GSA boundary. For that reason, it’s agricultural wells, it’s domestic wells, it’s public water supply wells, it’s all private and industrial wells. Every type of extraction facility that’s located within our boundary will become part of the registry, so that we have the tools in order to make good groundwater management decisions moving forward.
Don: By registering wells, landowners will help keep decisions about how groundwater is managed locally.
