North Kings GSA remains on track to submit updated GSP after public comment period concludes

The North Kings GSA and its Kings Subbasin partners remain on track to finalize and submit updated Groundwater Sustainability Plans (GSPs or Plans) to the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) by the January 31, 2025, deadline.

The North Kings GSA is finalizing its updated GSP based on public feedback received during the recent comment period. The public comment period began October 11 and concluded with a public hearing at the Board of Directors meeting on November 21, 2024. The final updated GSP will be presented for approval at a special Board meeting on January 16, 2025.

The combined efforts of the Kings Subbasin GSAs aim to address the 12 corrective actions identified by DWR to maintain GSP approval. By addressing these actions in the updated Plans, the Kings Subbasin demonstrates their commitment to achieve a sustainable groundwater supply through local leadership. Maintaining an approved GSP is the linchpin of keeping local control over groundwater sustainability efforts; without it, the State would move to intervene and regulate groundwater directly.

The Kings Subbasin GSAs have addressed DWR’s 12 corrective actions on three different fronts:

  • Addressed data gaps with a collaborative interconnected surface water study with Madera Subbasin, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and Friant Water Authority.
  • Addressed groundwater and subsidence data gaps through a confined aquifer study, aided through the implementation of several GSAs’ landowner well registration efforts.
  • Launched a program to mitigate the impacts to domestic wells caused by groundwater level decline through the My Dry Well Relief Program and similar mitigation programs.

The North Kings GSA’s updated GSP will be available on the GSP page as soon as it is finalized and adopted by the Board, anticipated for the January 16th special Board of Directors meeting.
