Developing projects is a key strategy to achieving groundwater sustainability in the North Kings GSA. Projects help capture additional surface water supplies, helping reduce the need to pump groundwater while also providing opportunities for groundwater recharge to recover from periods of over-pumping.
Required by 2040 under the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), sustainability is being driven by each of the North Kings GSA’s member agencies. Each member agency is responsible to address or “mitigate” the groundwater overdraft within their boundaries. Most of the North Kings GSA member agencies are addressing groundwater overdraft through a series of projects aligned with the North Kings GSA’s Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP) and its implementation. This collaboration among the North Kings GSA and its member agencies is crucial for achieving groundwater sustainability by 2040 under SGMA.
The North Kings GSA maintains an up-to-date project list, serving as living document containing all completed, ongoing, and future projects.

The project list supports the North Kings GSA’s mission to meet sustainability goals outlined in its Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP). The list will remain dynamic, updated annually as new projects are planned, begin progress, or reach completion.
The current project list contains 52 projects, with 13 completed and 10 in progress. The combined estimated annual benefit of all projects on the list is nearly 284,000 acre-feet. Completed and in-progress projects contribute over 158,00 acre-feet of water a year through either water savings or increased water supply capture.
