Well Registration Effort Strengthens Groundwater Data
The North Kings Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA) is continuing its well registration effort as it moves into a new phase focused on identifying unregistered wells and improving the completeness of local groundwater data. As the agency responsible for maintaining sustainable groundwater levels, it is critical to have a complete and accurate record of all existing and future wells.
Progress to Date
As of March 23, 2026, 8,199 wells have been registered, with 3,393 users in Subcurrent. This data strengthens the GSA’s ability to understand groundwater use across the GSA.
To support participation, the GSA conducted an outreach program with extensive communications that included workshops across the region, partnerships with key organizations, direct mail, road signs, flyers, news, and radio features to help expand awareness.
Why It Matters
This effort is about being prepared. A complete and consistent dataset allows the GSA to make informed decisions and respond to changing conditions.
For landowners, better data means clearer direction and fewer surprises as groundwater management evolves under SGMA.
Registration Remains Ongoing – Enforcement Pending
As a necessary next step, the GSA will continue efforts to identify parcels with unregistered wells and encourage landowners to complete registration. Fee waivers are available and granted for those eligible.
An enforcement policy is also in development and will be considered at upcoming Board meetings. Moving forward, well registration will remain standard for newly constructed wells and property ownership transfers.
