Work Complete on North Kings GSA’s First Monitoring Wells, Next Phase Set to Begin
The North Kings GSA has reached an important milestone with the completion of its first agency-owned groundwater infrastructure. Eleven dedicated monitoring wells, including one funded by the California Department of Water Resources, are now in operation across the GSA. The new monitoring locations represent a significant investment in the long-term data needed to support sustainable and local groundwater management.
Why More Data Matters
Groundwater conditions vary across the basin. Some areas respond differently to pumping, recharge, and seasonal changes. By strategically placing dedicated monitoring wells throughout the GSA, the agency can better understand these local differences, identify groundwater trends, and evaluate the effectiveness of groundwater management efforts.
The expanded monitoring system also helps the GSA:
- Track long-term groundwater trends.
- Measure the effects of recharge projects and other groundwater management efforts.
- Support local implementation of SGMA with stronger, more representative data.
What’s Next
The next phase of the project is already moving forward, with construction bids anticipated soon for an additional 8 to 10 monitoring wells. Work is expected to begin later this year, extending monitoring into the western portion of the GSA and filling additional data gaps where it has been limited.
